Farm to River Partnership

North Raccoon Farm To River Partnership

The North Raccoon Farm to River Partnership is an Iowa Water Quality initiative (WQI) to implement in-field and edge-of-field practices that keep nitrogen and phosphorus out of Iowa waters. The project started in 2018 and and has been renewed for another three years with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) to continue the project through 2027.

Goals include: installation of bioreactors, saturated buffers, targeted wetlands and new acres of cover crops. Other aspects of the project include tile and stream water monitoring and collection of in-field data on nitrogen behavior in manure systems.

ACWA leads the project located in five watersheds in the counties of Sac, Calhoun, Carroll and Greene. The project recently expanded its geographic area and is focusing on batch-and-build installations in Sac County as well as cover crop adoption in Greene County. The Iowa WQI project includes matching funds to support water quality improvement efforts.

The project goals support the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy recommendations.  The strategy calls for a 45 percent reduction in nitrogen and phosphorus in Iowa’s waters before they enter the Mississippi River.
